Five Word Speech
Respect History. Reimagine The Future.
- Norman Teague
In a unique partnership with Adobe, The Webby Awards is proud to present a Special Achievement award for the innovative use of creative AI technology to expand the possibilities of artistic expression. The award honors an individual who has made a singular contribution to creativity by demonstrating how AI can inspire, elevate, and enable new forms of human imagination and storytelling.
Norman Teague is redefining what it means to be a designer in the digital age, fusing cultural storytelling, community advocacy, and cutting-edge technology to reshape the creative landscape.
In Jam Sessions, his groundbreaking exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Teague and his studio used generative AI to reinterpret 15 iconic MoMA collection pieces through the lens of Black aesthetics, identity, and improvisation. Posing questions like “What would a Bauhaus chair look like if it had African roots?”, the team embraced an iterative, collaborative process that treated AI as a creative accelerator rather than a replacement. Teague and his team used Adobe Firefly for the project because it’s the only AI-powered image generator that offered the copyright protection and transparency they required. The results, some realized as full-scale prototypes, represent a bold, collaborative vision of design history, rewritten with imagination, empathy, and intention. This unprecedented exhibition at one of the world’s most influential institutions became a global touchpoint for how generative AI can be used to reimagine, not replicate, cultural history.
For his transformative use of creative AI, his dedication to rewriting dominant narratives, and his visionary leadership at the intersection of culture, technology, and design, it is our great privilege to honor Norman Teague with the 2025 Webby Special Achievement Award.
