The 27th Annual Webby Awards is excited to honor Tobe Nwigwe with a 2023 Webby Special Achievement Award in honor of his innovative use of the Internet to create art that is imaginative and poignant as seen in his album moMINTS and his role as Nick in the Netflix series Mo

Tobe Nwigwe is a remarkable artist with a great sense of direction and vision at the heart of all his endeavors–as noted in the recent moMINTS. Nwigwe constantly redefines his work, with each new project pushing the boundary even more than his last. moMINTS was celebrated for the deeply affective lyrics and thoughtful breathtaking execution. The project included 11 music videos that he released within four months of each other–it’s evident that he’s an artist strategically using digital to elevate his work. moMINTS took the Internet by storm, with tracks “Lord Forgive Me” and “ROUND HERE (PART 1)” gaining millions of streams upon release. Nwigwe has a talent for fostering a holistic digital presence, with his robust catalog of music videos acting as visual extensions of his art. Not to mention his social media, which he uses as the direct line to his global community of fans. 

Moreover, he’s brought his talents to streaming by starring as Nick in the series Mo. He plays the childhood friend of the show’s protagonist, adding acting to the impressive line-up of talents he has under his belt. The character mirrors Nwigwe’s roots in Houston–specifically Alief, a suburb in which both he and lead actor, Mohammed “Mo” Amer, grew up in. His work in the show has been hailed as his exciting and impressive foray into film. It illustrates his constant charge to push his craft to the next level and his adamant refusal to be boxed in as an artist of one medium.
