Special Achievement honors those whose work has improved upon the experience and capabilities of the Internet in novel and impactful ways.
The 27th Annual Webby Awards is honored to recognize Tracee Ellis Ross with a 2023 Webby Special Achievement Award for her ingenious use of the Internet to share multidimensional stories of belonging, increase Black representation in the beauty industry, and serve as a constant, positive force on the Internet.
A talented actress, producer and CEO, Tracee Ellis Ross is one of the most beloved people on the Internet, and for good reason. Whether she is on our televisions delivering jokes or on our social feeds in couture, Tracee Ellis Ross personifies self-acceptance and the joy that comes from living life on one’s own terms, even (and especially) if it deviates from society’s expectations. She’s brought this belief in unwavering self-acceptance and belonging to the beauty industry with her inclusive haircare brand Pattern. What started as Ross’ own journey with her hair has exploded into the robust brand for textured hair, with products and tools. Throughout Pattern’s success, the Internet has played a driving role, with Tracee Ellis Ross’ vision and ability to connect with fans across the Internet at its core.
Moreover, Tracee Ellis Ross has brought her talents to audio storytelling through her new podcast I Am America, which she executive produces and co-writes. Through the podcast, she is using a new medium to pull back the curtain on explored stories of people searching for belonging in the nation—from men navigating what masculinity means to them to architects developing spaces for restorative justice. With her at the helm and behind the scenes, I Am America is sharing beautiful stories of those who define their identities within complex systems with audiences worldwide.
For her wholehearted embrace of the Internet as a space to carve out spaces of belonging, forge more representation, and inspire others to live their most authentic lives, it is our great privilege to honor Tracee Ellis Ross with a 2023 Webby Special Achievement Award.
