About Webby Special Achievement
Special Achievement honors those whose work has improved upon the experience and capabilities of the Internet in novel and impactful ways.
The 24th Annual Webby Awards is delighted to honor Trevor Bedford and Nextstrain.org with a 2020 Webby Special Achievement Award for launching an open-source, collaborative web tool to track the spread of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus disease.
As the global impact of COVID-19 continues to set in, its rapid spread has upended the world, left the world's most vulnerable communities unprotected, and left people yearning for accurate information amidst a rise in misinformation.The Internet has become the lifeblood for people looking to understand vetted facts about COVID-19, especially as government leaders censor information. By creating an open-source, collaborative website to track the development of the disease in real-time, Bedford has helped people across the country and world better understand how the disease's genetic codes are mutating and what that may mean for vaccine development.
For rising to the occasion, and for developing nextstrain.org, it is our great privilege to honor Nextstrain.org and Trevor Bedford with a Webby Special Achievement Award.
