The 24th Annual Webby Awards is humbled to honor Swizz Beatz and Timbaland with a 2020 Webby Crush the Internet Award to recognize their Internet-breaking creation of the Verzuz battles on Instagram Live, to celebrate legendary songwriters and producers, while entertaining people during the COVID-19 outbreak.
As we collectively navigate the impact of COVID-19 on the world, the Internet has become the most powerful tool to help people connect and escape the uncertainty of current times. One of the things that sees us through is art. Since launching the Verzuz battles, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland's creation has become an educational platform for hundreds of thousands of viewers, highlighting the deep catalogues of producers and songwriters behind pop culture's most influential songs. From battles like T-Pain vs. Lil Jon, to Ne-Yo vs. Johntá Austin, to the battle that literally broke the Internet: Babyface vs. Teddy Riley, Verzuz demonstrates Timbaland and Swizz Beatz' belief in the Internet as the perfect tool to entertain people while educating them on music.
