The Webby Awards is honored to recognize Kickstarter as Webby Breakout of the Year in 2014 for proving the massive power of crowdfunding and forever changing the way we invest in and launch projects. Kickstarter has become the go-to platform for amazing ideas from unknown entrepreneurs, concerned citizens, big-name celebrities, and beyond. Last year alone the platform saw $480 million in funding for projects from 3 million people across all seven continents; as well as the successful launch of such amazing initiatives as a human-powered helicopter, the debut of a Philly skate park, the funding of a Veronica Mars movie, and much, much more. Then, of course, there’s Oculus Rift, which went from being a Kickstarter campaign to becoming a $2 billion Facebook acquisition. We believe this year marks a major shift for Kickstarter, as it has fundamentally changed the world by giving everyday people the power to start, support, and fund projects. For this reason, The Webby Awards is excited to honor Kickstarter as the 2014 Webby Breakout of the Year.
