In 2004, craigslist tipped over from a popular online bulletin board and community to a global cultural phenomenon. Founded ten years ago by Craig Newmark as a way to keep friends up to date on events in the Bay Area, craigslist today helps more than eight million people in nearly 120 cities and 21 countries find jobs, apartments, and lovers. Over the past year, craigslist has expanded internationally, launching local sites in cities around the globe including New York, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Sydney, Sao Paulo, and Bangalore. Newmark is living proof that an organization can be wildly successful while remaining true to its mission of providing a free and valuable community service.
